Three Fort Benning Soldiers will be honored at 10 a.m. March 30 at the Airborne Walk on Eubanks Field for their actions while deployed to Afghanistan in 2008.
Capt. Matthew R. Myer and Spc. Michael T. Denton will be awarded Silver Stars, and Sgt. 1st Class David L. Dwzik will be presented a Bronze Star with “V” device, for their valor on July 13, 2008, during the Battle of Wanat, Afghanistan.
During the Battle of Wanat, nine Soldiers from their company were killed in action and 27 were wounded.
At the time of the Battle of Wanat, Myer, Denton and Dwzik were assigned to Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. During Chosen Company’s 15-month deployment to the Kunar and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan, 16 of their Soldiers were killed in action and 50 were wounded.
Prior to the award ceremony Denton will be promoted to sergeant.
At a separate ceremony at 3 p.m. March 29 at Shiloh High School, Snellville, Ga., the family of Cpl. Jonathan R. Ayers will be presented his Silver Star for his actions during the Battle of Wanat, which is being awarded posthumously.
The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States and is presented to servicemembers who distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism. It is the third highest award presented for valor.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team is based in Vicenza, Italy.
