heavy weapons training

Weapons training will be conducted over Fort Benning’s eastern boundaries on 25 Mar, 1-9 Apr, 12-23 Apr and 27-28 Apr 09. The training will involve weapons firing which may cause disturbances.

Patterson Award

The Army’s outstanding Officer Candidate School graduate for 2008 will be presented the Patterson Award March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Fort Benning Conference Center.
This year’s Patterson Award winner is 2nd Lt. Kerry L. Zanders Jr.
Zanders is a native of Detroit, MI, and joined the Army in July 1999. After attaining the rank of sergeant first class, he attended and graduated from Officer Candidate School. He was the Distinguished Honor Graduate for his class and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 2007.
Zanders is a veteran of campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. His awards and decorations include a Bronze Star with bronze oak leaf, Army Commendation Medal with bronze oak leaf, Afghanistan and Iraq campaign medals, 75th Regiment affiliation, combat infantryman’s badge and Parachutist and Senior Parachutist badges as well as parachutist badges from Czechoslovakia and Australia.
He is currently pursuing a bachelor of science degree from Columbus State University. He is a company executive officer with the 197th Infantry Regiment.
Zanders and his wife Angela are the parents of three children.
The Patterson Award was established in 1952 and is based on accomplishments in leadership, academics, aptitude and character. Only one outstanding student is presented this prestigious award each year.
The award is named for Capt. Robert P. Patterson, who served as the Secretary of War during the Truman administration. A judge on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Patterson earned a Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart during World War II.

Award ceremony Monday March 30

Three Fort Benning Soldiers will be honored at 10 a.m. March 30 at the Airborne Walk on Eubanks Field for their actions while deployed to Afghanistan in 2008.
Capt. Matthew R. Myer and Spc. Michael T. Denton will be awarded Silver Stars, and Sgt. 1st Class David L. Dwzik will be presented a Bronze Star with “V” device, for their valor on July 13, 2008, during the Battle of Wanat, Afghanistan.
During the Battle of Wanat, nine Soldiers from their company were killed in action and 27 were wounded.
At the time of the Battle of Wanat, Myer, Denton and Dwzik were assigned to Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. During Chosen Company’s 15-month deployment to the Kunar and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan, 16 of their Soldiers were killed in action and 50 were wounded.
Prior to the award ceremony Denton will be promoted to sergeant.
At a separate ceremony at 3 p.m. March 29 at Shiloh High School, Snellville, Ga., the family of Cpl. Jonathan R. Ayers will be presented his Silver Star for his actions during the Battle of Wanat, which is being awarded posthumously.
The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States and is presented to servicemembers who distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism. It is the third highest award presented for valor.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team is based in Vicenza, Italy.

Airborne Community mourns loss of Ben Reese

Fort Benning and the Airborne Community mourns the passing of Ben Reese, one of the few surviving members of the original Airborne test platoon. A funeral service for Mr. Reese is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, 25 March, at the Airborne Walk near Eubanks Field. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be conducted at the Infantry Chapel near Doughboy Stadium.
